REGISTRATION STRATEGIES

A. Read “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)” and the “Huaka’i Newsletter – Registration Issue for New Students” on this website. These resources will give you a head start in preparation for registration.

B. As the first step towards beginning the registration process, gather your registration materials and resources: the Schedule of Classes (SOC) (on line at http://www.hawaii.edu/myuh/manoa/) which you should have received in the mail, the UH Catalog (on line at http://www.catalog.hawaii.edu), your program/college requirements (on line at http://www.advising.hawaii.edu) and the list of Honors and “A” Section courses, which you can view in the Huaka’i Newsletter on this site. You should print the summary of Honors and “A” Section courses from the last page of the Newsletter.

C. Print out the “Preliminary List of Courses” worksheet. List 8-10 courses that you would be interested in taking in the fall semester. Think about why you have made these choices, in particular, how courses might help you to explore your major or meet academic or career goals that you have set up for yourself. If you are still exploring majors, and want to take at least some courses that will meet general education requirements, go to http://www.advising.hawaii.edu/artsci/fyac/program_sheets.htm. You might want to initially follow the college/program requirements for the BA in Arts & Sciences until you have had a chance to explore your major more fully.

D. Do at least two Block Schedules. See http://www.hawaii.edu/myuh/manoa/block.htm for guidelines and for blank Block Schedule Forms. (Hint: MWF = Monday, Wednesday, Friday; TR = Tuesday, Thursday)

F. When planning your schedule consider the following:

  • Total number of credits you’ll be taking – see FAQ, #7, on this website
  • Flow of your day – Does your peak concentration time coincide with the times you’ve scheduled to do your most challenging academic work?
  • When are you going to eat lunch?
  • If you schedule back-to-back courses, do you have enough time to get from one class to another? (Hint: on a MWF schedule, generally 10 minutes between classes; on a TR schedule, generally 15 minutes between classes)
  • Are your final exams spread out over a reasonable time period? (Hint: check p. 34 of the SOC for the Final Exam schedule)

G. Obtain all necessary approvals – the SOC indicates restricted courses that require approvals. See FAQ, #’s 1, 2, 3, and 4 regarding Placement Exams.

H. Keep track of important deadlines, which you can find in several places in the SOC. If it helps, fill in the deadline dates below. (Hint: check out p. 5 of the SOC, and p. 8 of the Huaka’i newsletter on this site)
