Calling Prospective Peer Mentors!

Looking for an opportunity to develop your leadership skills? Want to learn how to effectively facilitate groups? Feel like you can positively contribute to the experience of new Honors freshmen?

Have we got some opportunities for you!!

The Honors program will be selecting peer mentors for the Fall 2005 semester later in the Spring. Keep your eye out for additional information about the recruiting and selection process. We are looking for mentors in the following capacities:

New Student Orientation: Peer mentors aid in the transition of new freshmen to the Manoa campus by introducing students to the basics of collegiate academics, Honors opportunities, and registration processes. In addition, NSO peer mentors design and lead freshmen on personalized tours of the Manoa campus and assist these students with coming to understand the campus through their own perspectives. Training takes place in late spring/early summer. Orientation occurs in July and August. (We are looking for Sophs/Juniors/Seniors, but this is an especially great leadership opportunity for Sophomores.)

Residential Honors Floors: Peer mentors assist with creating a sense of community for residential Honors students. By working in pairs or teams, mentors design co-curricular programming opportunities in the residence halls that promote positive academic interdependence, facilitate the discussion between students and faculty, and introduce residents to the myriad possibilities academically and socially at Manoa. Training begins in late summer and extends throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. (We are looking for Juniors or Seniors.)

Honors 101 Peer Mentors: These mentors work closely with Honors 101 faculty and an academic advisor/peer mentor trainer to serve as a teaching assistant in the Honors 101 sections. In addition to assisting with the curriculum designed by the faculty, mentors are afforded the chance to design and implement their own lesson plans for areas they deem relevant for students. Some meetings with instructors will take place in spring semester and/or early summer. Training begins in August and extends throughout the Fall semester. (We are looking for Juniors or Seniors.)

In addition, Honors would like to have all categories of peer mentors available, if possible, to help with an event the week before school starts.

Even if you cannot make a commitment to the entire summer as an NSO peer, apply anyway if you would like to help: we are still in the process of planning events.

These are excellent opportunities for you to contribute to the University and the Honors program, develop your own skills, and enhance your resume with leadership and service!

Additional information and a schedule will be forthcoming!
