The Hubert and Mable Frings Scholarship[1]

The Honors Program is pleased to announce a competition for scholarships that will support costs of attendance at the University of Hawai˙i at Mänoa and/or independent research and creative projects.  The intent of the endowment is to promote and support mentorship between faculty members and honors students.

To be eligible for an award you must be in good standing in the Honors Program and be at least in the second semester of your sophomore year. Awards are given on the basis of academic merit, as demonstrated by scholarly record, and financial need.  Preference is given to multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary study.

A total of $2500 will be awarded each semester.  Generally, the Honors Council will make two awards per semester: one of $1500 and one of $1000.  However, the Honors Council may make awards in other combinations and may sometimes decline to make awards of the full amount if there are not sufficient quality applications.  Students are limited to one award per academic year, but may re-apply in subsequent years.

Applications are due to the Honors Program (Sinclair 504b) on April 27.

Please include in your application:

  1. a cover letter
  2. proposal or statement of purpose
  3. a sealed and signed letter of support from the faculty member who is your mentor (their letter should            both recommend you and attest to your mentorship relationship)
  4. brief statement of financial need
  5. academic CV

Please note that this is a scholarship and that payment will be made through the office of Financial Aid in the form of tuition.

If you have any questions about preparing your application please contact the Honors Program (email honors@hawaii.edu or call 956-8391)
