RESEARCH AND PUBLIC POLICY (HON 301)

HON 301 encourages second-year Honors students to undertake disciplined inquiry. Specifically, the course invites them to engage issues of ethical principle or public policy by finding resources, using critically the resources they have found, exploring the implications of alternative possibilities inherent in those issues or suggested by their resources, and finally communicating in a precise and effective manner the results of their investigations.

UHM Honors Program has a partnership with the College of Social Sciences’ Public Policy Center to teach this special course for sophomores. The Center brings together expertise, commitment, and a strong and continuing desire to enhance the quality of community life through teaching, research, and civic engagement.

A given section of HON 301 typically will be structured according to the specialty areas of the faculty associated with the Public Policy Center. These areas include:

  • Environmental and Resource Management
  • Crime and Substance Abuse
  • Health and Well-Being
  • Peace, Security and Risk Management
  • Regional and Community Development
  • Globalization and Civil Society
