Live Hawai'i already?
Avoid culture shock and sticker shock!
Many high school seniors in Hawai'i presume that they should go to
university on the 'mainland,' perhaps because of the intimate community
offered by small liberal arts colleges or the reputations of large 'name
brand' private and public universities, as well as a desire to broaden
the mind through experience of different places and cultures. Make
sense?
Sure, but what if you're not quite ready to leave the islands and worry that, like many others before you, you'll never come back if you do?
Or, what if like many Hawai'i students, your experience in the continental U.S. is not what you had hoped for and you have to return with a sense of disappointment and failure?
In fact, why go away, leaving the security of family and the familiarity of multicultural Hawai'i, to say nothing of the beaches and plate lunches, when it is all here at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa? We have world class facilities and programs in many fields, and the special intimacy of the Honors community.
And if you do want to experience the continental U.S., you can do that through one of UHM's many exchange programs such as National Student Exchange (www.nse.org), Study Abroad (www.studyaborad.org) or International Exchange (www.manoa.hawaii.edu/international/ie).
And perhaps most important of all in these tough economic times, you'll only have to pay in-state tuition. Come to UHM and join Honors: who says you can't have it all?
