Honors Housing creates a sense of community of academically oriented
students. We achieve this sense of community through the integration of
residential and academic life, through both spontaneous and programmed
activities. Students form study groups, mentor each other and provide
informal support in academic work and campus life. The Honors Program
organizes and/or sponsors Study Sessions, Faculty Visits and Scholarship
and Graduate School Prep Talks, among other activities.1 - submit the Student Housing App form indicating this intention by May 1st

For many students, going to college provides the first opportunity for
independent living, but it is also a chance to become an active member
of a vibrant residential community. Studies consistently show that
engagement in co-curricular life and the formation of networks of
supportive friends are important factors in success in higher education,
and most students’ relationships are created from the people in close
proximity. With this in mind, the Honors Program encourages students to
be a part of a community of scholars in the residence halls as well as
the classrooms of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. The Honors Program reserves the top three connecting floors in the newly renovated freshman hall at Hale Aloha Ilima. The Hale Aloha complex consists of four 13-story towers. All four towers are Substance Free (i.e. do not allow smoking or drinking) and offer direct access to the campus computer network. Each floor accommodates 24-26 students, who share two community bathrooms. These floors also share two lounges perfect for getting to know fellow students, whether that be talking story or holding study sessions. The top floor has a recreational area including pool and ping pong tables, kitchen with major appliances and the laundry room.
Space is also reserved in the upper-class Frear Hall for Honors Students who wish to continue (or start!) living together. Frear is the newest housing facility and houses 810 students in two interconnected 12-story towers in suite arrangements. It's designed to be eligible for LEED silver certification, a rating system that provides standards for environmentally sustainable construction. In addition to Honors Housing, Frear is home to a variety of other Residential Learning Programs.
Rooms in Honors Housing are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, so please apply early!
Living in Honors Housing is OPTIONAL. Honors Students are not required to live in Honors Housing and may choose live elsewhere on-campus or reside off-campus.
