Honors Advising and Orientation (HOA) Peer Leaders:
In Hawaiian, hoa
means companion, friend, associate, colleague, comrade, partner,
mate, peer, and fellow.
Hoa kula means classmate. The HOA (Honors
Orientation and Advising) Program is a summer orientation program
designed to support the transition of new freshmen into both the
university and, more specifically, to the Honors Program. Hoa Kula
Peer Leaders introduce students to the basics of collegiate academics,
Honors opportunities, and registration processes.
Specifically, Hoa Kula Peer Leaders
are trained to facilitate team-building activities, present basic
registration information, share personal insights from their university
and Honors experiences, and create a positive encounter for incoming
students. Hoa Kula leaders are selected in late spring, and
register for Honors 380 in Summer Session II. Training prepares
Hoa Kula leaders to facilitate HOA sessions in July and August.
Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in good academic standing with the
Honors Program may apply.
