ENGAGEMENT

You must get involved to have an impact. No one is impressed with the won-lost record of the referee.

(John H. Holcomb, American educator)

Research in education consistently demonstrates that the more college students are engaged in campus life, the more likely they are to succeed academically, enjoy their college experience, stay in school, and persist to graduation.

By engaging in scholarship, leadership and service, students also build experiences that employers, scholarship committees and graduate schools look for among successful applicants. Admission and award committees are firstly interested in your academic abilities, of course, but since so many well-qualified people apply, they can then afford to look closely at other things, such as your level of engagement outside of the classroom in scholarship, leadership and service.  The emphasis in admissions is shifting from what you can potentially get out the the program, to what you can potentially give.

On top of these strategic benefits, engagement brings its own immediate rewards, including more meaningful relationships with faculty, friends and the community.

Our expectations

The Honors Program expects you to be engaged in scholarship, leadership and service, but also wants you to consider more generally your personal growth and development.  We offer priority registration to our students in order to help you make the additional commitment to all-round excellence that is expected of you.  In order to earn that privilege and maintain good standing in the program, you must satisfactorily complete engagement requirements that are designed to promote your academic/professional growth and personal/social development.

The Requirement

As part of your advising each semester, you must bring an updated copy of your Curriculum Vita (CV).  During your appointment, you will discuss with your advisor your progress in the following areas:

Scholarship and Career Development

Leadership and Service

Diversity and Intercultural Appreciation

Personal Development

All Honors Program graduates must demonstrate progress in all areas.  You will work closely with your advisor to identify opportunities and record activities that are aligned with your personal, academic and career goals.
