Val Wayne, Ph.D.

Professor

My research focuses on Shakespeare and Renaissance drama, especially in relation to women and feminist and cultural theory. I’m also more broadly interested in women writers, historical change, and cultural differences. I’ve written numerous essays about early modern literature and culture and edited or co-edited four books on Shakespeare and feminism, Renaissance marriage, Thomas Middleton, and early modern romance. One of my current preoccupations is the relationship between Cervantes’s Don Quixote and Shakespeare’s late plays. I’m also preparing a critical edition of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline for the Arden Shakespeare, third series, and my work as a textual editor makes me attentive to how representations of texts change over time. Studying the history, culture, and literature of early modern Europe – the period from 1500 to 1700 -- means I do a lot of mental time travel over about four centuries.
