HON 190 Honors Tutorial (V)

An Honors Tutorial is usually taught as a discussion section of a regular lecture course, although it may also be used to credit laboratory experience, directed research or other form of instructional supplement to lectures.

The Honors Tutorial is a good way for instructors to accommodate a small number of Honors students in a program or area of interest that would not generate sufficient enrolment for an A Section course.

The Honors Program generally compensates departments that offer HON 190 courses, and the vast majority of these are for one-credit, at the (more or less) equivalent of 50% of a 3-credit lectureship at Step C. For example, some departments take a 0.25 FTE Graduate Assistantship.

For students this is an attractive option as, with a one-credit HON 190 attached to a 3-credit course, they receive four credits of Honors courses towards the requirements of their Sophomore Honors awards. To propose an Honors Tutorial please contact the Honors Program (honors@hawaii.edu).
