REGISTRATION STRATEGIES
A. Gather your registration materials and resources
You will need the following documents:
Schedule of Classes (SOC)
You should have received
this in the mail.
If not check online at
http://www.hawaii.edu/myuh/manoa/
UHM Catalog
You can buy this at the bookstore.
It is online at
http://www.catalog.hawaii.edu
Program/College requirements
Print a copy from
http://www.advising.hawaii.edu
Honors and “A” Section courses
Print a copy from the Honors Program website:
http://www.honors.hawaii.edu
B. Do your homework
Make sure that you fully understand (if that is possible!) General Education requirements, College requirements and Major requirements. Ideally, you will have made an academic plan, either making your own or adapting one of the forms provided by your college. Check out websites such as:
www.advising.hawaii.edu/artsci/
www.cba.hawaii.edu/students/admissions.cfm
www.hawaii.edu/coe/departments/osas/
C. Select your classes
Print out the “My Courses” worksheet. List 8-10 courses that you would be interested in taking in the fall semester. Don't worry about schedules at this point. Think more about courses that might help you to meet academic or career goals that you have set up for yourself, especially:
Courses that are required of your major or intended
major
OR
Courses you think might help you identify a major
Courses that meet General Education Requirements
Courses that satisfy college requirements
Courses that will stretch you in new, exciting ways
For each of the courses
complete the columns in the table, noting relevant page
numbers for easy reference, identifying any
pre-requisites or approvals that you will need, and most
importantly stating why it is that you would like to
take this class.
D. Check availability
Go to the MyUH portal to check on class availability at Manoa:
http://myuh.hawaii.edu/uhdad/avail.classes?i=MAN
E. Make a schedule
Using the list of courses you have made, now try to fit them into a schedule. Download block schedules and review the guidelines at: http://www.hawaii.edu/myuh/manoa/block.htm.
When planning your schedule consider the following:
-
The mix of classes: try to include a range that meet various requirements (and look especially for courses that satisfy multiple requirements!).
-
The total number of credits you’ll be taking: see FAQs, #7
-
The time it takes to get to class: on a MWF schedule, there is generally only 10 minutes between classes; and on a TR schedule, generally only 15 minutes. Ideally you need time to review notes both after and before classes.
-
Your final exam schedule (check p. 34 of the SOC for the Final Exam schedule)
F. Obtain all necessary approvals
The SOC indicates restricted courses that require approvals. See FAQ, #’s 1, 2, 3, and 4 regarding Placement Exams.
G. Go on-line to register
http://myuhinfo.hawaii.edu/page/registration
H. Keep track of important deadlines
You can find these in several places in the SOC. If it helps, fill in the deadline dates below.
