A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome
to Huaka’i, the Honors Program’s online
newsletter, and thank you for taking the time to visit
our site. The product of student writing and faculty
advising, Huaka’i hopes to help keep all members
of the Honors community informed and updated. We also
hope to give those of you who would like to learn more
about the program, some sense of what we’re all
about. In short, there’s a little something here
for everyone – or at least there will be soon!
As you might be able to tell, this publication is currently
being revamped and re-constructed. Talk
Story Time –
initiated by our Honors Student Coordinator and former
Newsletter Editor, Julianne Hiu – has become a
keystone of this new publication. A note from Julianne
and the cover stories listed on the previous page are
now located under the Headlines section. Be sure to
check out those articles if you have not already done
so. Also re-featured in this edition of the newsletter
is a special announcement from our Honors Academic Advisor,
Jeanne Oka. Interested in helping to promote the Honors
Program and recruit new Honors students? Well, be sure
to read Ms. Oka’s article entitled Students
Recruiting Students – now located under Service
Opportunities.
We’ve also listed a couple of fun, regularly scheduled
events that many of the Honors students at the dorms
attend religiously. Salsa Nights and Badminton Nights
have become something of a tradition with those of us
on the 11th and 12th floors of Hale Aloha Lehua, and
we’d love to have other Honors students like you
join us. Details and contact information are available
on the Regular Events page. But if salsa and badminton
are not quite your thing, give our Book
Reviews section
a try instead, and curl up on the couch with a little
something good to read!
Most of the rest of our site is under construction,
so continue to check back with us for new and improved
additions. Also, we’d really appreciate any feedback
or comments you might have, so please do not hesitate
to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you and
we hope you enjoy this edition of Huaka’i.
Aloha and mahalo,
Sheela Jane Menon
